What is Smart Lipo?

Smart Lipo, or Laser Lipolysis, is a variation on traditional liposuction that uses laser energy to liquefy fat before it’s removed from the body. This technique makes the fat easier to remove, which makes Smart Lipo a less aggressive procedure with a faster recovery and much less downtime. The procedure is not intended to significantly reduce weight, but rather to address fat that has been resistant to diet and exercise.

How Does it Work?

The SmartLipo laser fiber delivers thermal energy directly to fat cells and disrupts the fatty tissue, which allows for easy removal. The laser literally melts the fat, which is then removed using gentle suction. At the same time, tissue around the area tightens through coagulation and remodeling of the skin following laser heat exposure, contributing to a smoother shape overall.

What can I expect?

A smoother you! As with all procedures, a complimentary consult with our physician is required to determine whether or not you are a good candidate and to address your specific concerns and problem areas. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia and you will remain awake throughout the process, which contributes to a faster, easier recovery period than traditional liposuction. Oral medications are available prior to the procedure in addition to the local anesthesia in the form of tumescent fluid.
Once the selected areas are completely numb, a very thin tube containing the Smartlipo laser fiber is inserted into prominent fatty areas through a tiny incision and the melted fat is removed through gentle suction. You can relax, listen to music, or even take a nap during your procedure! The procedure time depends on the severity of areas being treated.

After the Procedure

Because laser liposuction is not performed under general anesthesia, the recovery period is typically easier and faster. Patients can expect light bruising and swelling and will be required to wear a compression garment for about 2-4 weeks to help with the healing process and support the areas treated. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within two to three days. Results can be seen immeidately but will continue to improve over three to six months.
