Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a highly effective aesthetic treatment that enhances the texture, tone, and color of your skin. Dr. Din and his team use the Rejuvapen™ microneedling device to create tiny injuries to the skin. These injuries cause your body to react by producing new collagen, the protein that supports your tissues and makes you look younger.

In addition to the micro-injuries that stimulate collagen growth, your expert therapist can use hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that also contributes to younger-looking skin. They may use artificial growth factors instead, or growth factors harvested from a patient’s blood.

PRP (platelet rich plasma) contains platelets taken from your blood and concentrated to produce a treatment with high levels of growth factors. Microneedling combined with PRP is often referred to as a “blood facial” or “vampire facial.”

Microneedling on its own is effective in stimulating your body’s natural healing powers and increasing collagen production, but adding PRP significantly enhances the effect, so blood facials are an increasingly popular form of microneedling treatment.

What happens during a microneedling procedure?

Before treatment, you apply a topical numbing cream to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the cream has taken effect, your technician slides the Rejuvapen microneedling instrument along your skin, penetrating up to 2mm into the skin. As the treatment progresses, your skin thickens and becomes inflamed in response to the damage caused by the microneedles.

If you’re having a blood facial, the process is the same, except you have blood drawn before the procedure that’s concentrated in a centrifuge to harvest the platelets for the PRP treatment.

Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is a safe and effective treatment method for most people, however, certain people shouldn’t undergo treatment. Anyone with the following factors should be advised to wait before receiving microneedling treatment:

  • Cuts or abrasions of the skin
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of poor wound healing
  • Radiation treatment within the last year
  • Steroid use within the previous three months

For most people, Dr. Din recommends between two and four treatments, spaced six to eight weeks apart. If the treatment area is heavily pigmented or scarred, it could take up to eight treatments before the optimal level of rejuvenation is achieved.

Your face may glow after the treatment, but it does take time for your body to produce new collagen fibers, so it could be between one and three months before you see the final results.
