How Does ACell + PRP Injection Therapy Work?

Patients who are good candidates for PRP + ACell Injection Therapy typically are not interested in surgerical treatments. Major objectives are to prevent future hair loss, and improve the quality of existing hair as well as fill in hairless patches and areas of the scalp that have low density. Women account for 40 percent of patients experiencing hair loss. This is typically for reasons different than male pattern baldness. The emotional impact and daily influence of hair loss for women is devastating in ways different than what is experienced for men. An ongoing effort to conceal thinning areas can be an embarrassment and a constant hinderance to living out a normal life as compared to their friends and peers.

PRP and ACell injections  are a non-surgicial option for hair restoration that is astoundingly successful. ACell is an FDA approved biomatrix that assists in the repair and remodeling of damaged tissues. When used in conjunction with PRP, the growth factors released from alpha granules of platelets dramatically augments the healing properties of ACell.

ACell + PRP Injection:
Therapy Description

The injection of PRP + ACell results in healthier and larger follicles that in turn causes more robust hair growth. Adult stem cells are attracted to areas of PRP injection by growth factors that signal transition of stem cells to new tissue spurring rapid angiogenesis and remodeling of dormant scalp. PRP + ACell is extremely effective for male and female pattern hair loss including hair lost from alopecia areata, eyebrow hypotrichosis and other patient cases with non-hereditary hair loss.
Treatments take approximately 90 minutes to complete. First, a blood draw is taken from the patient. We utilize a double spin protocol to assure the highest concentration of PRP. One must keep in mind their are multiple factors to consider including at least 5X the normal platelet concentration, timing of platelet activation, and medications that patients might be taking that will affect quality of your PRP harvest.

A local anesthetic is then administered to completely numb the scalp treatment area. The PRP + ACell are combined and then injected over the full scalp or in a localized treatment area such as the eyebrows or beard. Large areas are often micro-needled first followed by PRP massaged into the scalp and injected. Smaller regions can be directly injected followed by stimulus to activate PRP degranulation.

Recovery

The recovery from PRP+ACell usually is concluded over 24-48hrs. Discomfort and pain can be usually managed with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Mild swelling may be observed however quickly resolves over this time frame. Normal cleaning of hair can usually begin the night following PRP + ACell treatments.
Hair growth can be seen beginning at approximately 2-3 months but is more often fully appreciated at 4-10 months. Full results are seen at 1 year. Maintenance of results may be required at 6-12 month intervals but injection frequency typically lengthens as the dormant scalp improves in overall quality and hair growth is restored.

PRP + ACell Therapy Hair Restoration Can Treat:
  • Female Pattern Hair Loss – Success can be achieved at almost all stages of hair loss.
  • Male Pattern Baldness – Most effectively in the early stages of balding. If there are numerous miniature hairs then recovery has a very good chance. If scalp has been dormant for an extended period of time then recovery of hair can be more difficult.
  • Hypotrichosis (fine/reduced hairs) of the eyebrows or beard
  • Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis
  • Traction alopecia often identified and prevalent in African American females.
  • Metabolic causes of hair loss – iron deficiency and medication related hair loss is responsive after correcting the underlying problem and beginning PRP + ACell injections.

Dr. Phillip Din will help determine if PRP + ACell is the correct treatment for you. A virtual or free consultation can be scheduled to determine if non surgical treatment of your hair loss is possible.
